Funny Poems (Maybe)

In a world that seems to be moving toward more chaos every day, I decided to try to add a bit of levity. I've written most of these poems while participating in poetry writing classes in the OLLI program at the University of Cincinnati. Some have appeared previously in my blog, "Letters for George." I hope they bring a smile. David Lundgren (Cincinnati, OH)

About Me

View my complete profile
I started writing poetry as a kid at Washington Grade School in my U.P. home town of Menominee, Michigan. After a short spell as an engineering major at Antioch College, I switched to literature and studied poetry writing more seriously. Now, after retiring from a career as a social psychologist at the University of Cincinnati, I find myself writing poetry again in OLLI classes at U.C. I like to write poems that rhyme, that contain a dose of humor, and that reflect the world around me and my life experience. Here are some of them.

POSTING SCHEDULE

I'll normally post one or more new poems every week or two (sometimes more, sometimes less).

LIMERICK OF THE WEEK

My hearing gets worse by the year

Going deaf is now my big fear

I pretend that I heard

Though I just got one word

And they all look at me like I’m queer

At breakfast we work on the Jumble

A task that insures we stay humble

Six letters are tough

And seven, so rough

No wonder the both of us grumble

Our days with the sheepdogs, the best

Our lives, a daily fun fest

The dogs liked their walk

Listened hard to our talk

And loved to lie close to my chest

On cable we watched “The Big Sleep”

Miss Lauren Bacall made me weep

Humphrey B., private eye

Caused the bad guys to die

The wages of sin can be steep

My life has gone on a digression

Line dancing is now my obsession

Boogie Shuffle drives me crazy

Chiki Cha Cha, don’t be lazy

At last I have found my profession

Three cheers! The Menominee Maroons

Bravo to their glorious platoons

The offense is speedy

The defense, so greedy

The opponents all look like buffoons

The U.P. was home in my youth

This explains why I’m often uncouth

We ran wild on the Bay

Cooked up mischief all day

And rejected all fake adult truth

I get all my laughs from Bugs Bunny

His temperament is ever so sunny

He’s always in trouble

Lives life on the bubble

But trouble’s what makes Bugsie funny

Aaron Rodgers, true star of the Packers

We Yoopers are Aaron’s true backers

Aaron throws for a score

Then runs for six more

Aaron R. makes the Packers attackers

Captain Marvel’s secret word is Shazam

He says it if he’s in a jam

Captain flies like an eagle

His bearing is regal

And he knocks down the crooks, Bing Bang Bam!
